Welcome to EYFS at Hatherley Infants School

At Hatherley Infants School, we believe that the Early Years are a magical time in a child’s learning journey — a time to explore, discover, and grow in confidence. Our EYFS setting provides a nurturing, inclusive environment where every child is valued, supported, and encouraged to thrive.

Through a carefully balanced mix of play-based and adult-guided learning, children in our Reception classes begin to develop the skills they need for a lifetime of learning. Our curriculum is rich, engaging, and thoughtfully planned around the EYFS framework, with a strong emphasis on the prime areas of learning: communication and language, physical development, and personal, social and emotional development. These are the foundations for success in all areas of life.

Lauren Rose, EYFS LEADAs children grow in independence and curiosity, we build on these foundations through the specific areas of learning: literacy, mathematics, understanding the world, and expressive arts and design. Our indoor and outdoor spaces are carefully designed to encourage exploration, problem-solving, and imaginative play — enabling children to follow their interests and make meaningful connections in their learning.

In reception we use Read Write Inc. to teach early reading and phonics, giving children the essential skills to become confident, fluent readers. Our English curriculum is enriched through Drawing Club and Talk for Writing, which develop children's creativity, vocabulary, and storytelling skills in fun and engaging ways. In mathematics, we follow White Rose which provides a strong foundation in number, shape, and problem-solving, supporting children to build a deep understanding of mathematical concepts through practical and playful experiences.

Our experienced team of practitioners works closely with each child, getting to know them as individuals and tailoring support to meet their unique needs. We also work in partnership with families to ensure that every child feels happy, safe, and confident as they take their first steps into school life.
