PSHE

Hatherley Infant School and Nursery is committed to the promotion of pupils’ personal and social, health and citizenship education because we want our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of our community and society as a whole.

We want our children to play a positive role in their own development to produce a feeling of self-worth.  At Hatherley, we believe that our children can do great things and become great people.

Intent

We will endeavour to enable the children to:

  • have a sense of belonging and purpose
  • feel confident about themselves
  • make their own decisions in an informed way
  • take responsibility for their own actions
  • act independently
  • be encouraged to lead a healthy lifestyle and become a healthy advocate
  • to have understand that their views have the right to be heard
  • become world citizens
  • to be resilient when faced with challenged

The school keeps up to date with PSHE initiatives and this helps to ensure the subject is given a high profile. We believe that children have the best chances in life if they are well equipped to become adventurous, caring and thoughtful citizens of the future.

Implementation

The school’s PSHE provision supports the school’s aims of developing confident world citizens and successful learners who are creative, resourceful and able to identify and solve problems. The social and emotional development of pupils is embedded throughout the entire school’s curriculum and culture. The school has a powerful combination of a planned thematic PSHE program, built around a spiral curriculum of recurring themes, designed to:

  1. Give pupils the knowledge and develop the self-esteem, confidence and self-awareness to make informed choices and decisions;
  2. Encourage and support the development of social skills and social awareness;
  3. Enable pupils to make sense of their own personal and social experiences;
  4. Promote responsible attitudes towards the maintenance of good physical and mental health, supported by a safe and healthy lifestyle;
  5. Enable effective interpersonal relationships and develop a caring attitude towards others;
  6. Encourage a caring attitude towards and responsibility for the environment;
  7. Help our pupils understand and manage their feelings, build resilience and be independent, curious problem solvers;
  8. Understand how society works and the laws, rights and responsibilities involved.

Impact

At Hatherley Infant School and Nursery, we believe that high-quality PSHE teaching gives children essential knowledge about the world, contributes to their personal development, equips them with a unique range of specialised skills of understanding, and examines important questions and issues that are essential for informed citizenship. It engages, inspires and challenges so that all children are resilient happy world citizens.

As responsible citizens, children at Hatherley are constantly supported to develop their ability and willingness to try new things, work hard, concentrate, push themselves, imagine, improve, understand others and not give up.

The school’s PINK curriculum, supported by the SEAL programme (Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning) supports this and regular circle times encourage the growth of self-confidence and respect for others. Children are encouraged to be aware of others less fortunate than themselves.  The curriculum identifies the key concepts and skills that underpin PSHE education and help children develop their spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical capabilities, preparing them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life.

The school keeps up to date with PSHE initiatives and this helps to ensure the subject is given a high profile. We believe that children have the best chances in life if they are well equipped to become adventurous, caring and thoughtful citizens of the future.

We want all our children to be able to…..

  • Try new things - enjoy new experiences such as joining clubs or groups.
  • Work hard - enjoy working hard in a range of activities and reflecting on how to become a successful learner.
  • Concentrate - search for methods to help with concentration such as mindfulness and develop areas of deep interest through mindfulness activities.
  • Improve - identify some areas for improvement and try to make improvements.
  • Push themselves  – keep trying after a first attempt and build resilience.
  • Imagine - be curious and ask questions in order to develop ideas.
  • Not give up - show stickability!
  • Understand and respect others - listen to others showing empathy.

Children need to be given opportunities to discuss and learn to improve in these eight areas of success and study role models who have achieved success.

All children are entitled to…

  • learn about values in a practical way that acts as an internal guide in their relationships and approach to learning
  • understand the process of how we become successful learners
  • learn about their body and how it works
  • learn about how to stay emotionally and physically healthy
  • learn how to solve conflicts when they arise
  • learn about Christianity and other major religions
  • learn how to keep safe, including on the internet, both in and out of school
  • learn about our school and class rules, their rights and responsibilities, respect, and their role as responsible citizens within our community.
